Vojvodina and Lazio Open a New Chapter in Regional Cooperation

On 19 February 2026, a meeting dedicated to establishing and enhancing cooperation between the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and the Lazio Region was held at the Representative Office of the Lazio Region (the Italian Republic) in Brussels.

As no formal institutional framework currently exists between the two regions, the discussions focused on identifying concrete avenues for future cooperation, especially in the areas of economic development, sports, culture, tourism, and partnerships between scientific and research institutions.

The delegation of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina proposed launching formal intergovernmental cooperation, to be formalized through the signing of an umbrella document — either a Letter of Intent or a Cooperation Agreement. This framework would institutionalize relations between the two regions and lay the groundwork for the development of tangible joint initiatives. Vojvodina’s established partnerships with the Italian regions of Umbria and Veneto were presented as a successful model of such cooperation.

Lazio Region representatives expressed their interest and readiness to submit the initiative, together with the examples of existing agreements, to the appropriate regional authorities, including the Secretary in charge of international cooperation.

The meeting also underscored Italy’s support for Serbia’s European integration efforts. Lazio Region representatives were invited to take part in the specialized EXPO 2027 in Belgrade, an invitation that sparked strong interest.

Additionally, they were invited to attend the reception celebrating Serbia’s National Day, organized by the Mission of the Republic of Serbia to the European Union, as well as a conference organized by Serbia’s Innovation Fund.
