Europe Day

Europe Day, which is held on May 9 every year, marks the anniversary of the historic “Schuman Declaration”. On that day in 1950, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Schuman, presented his idea of a new form of political cooperation in Europe. His vision was to establish a community, whose members would unite the production of coal and steel.
A year later, the European Coal and Steel Community was established, which in time
grew into the European Economic Community.
Schuman’s proposal is considered the beginning of what is now the European Union.
