Project description Overall objective:

To improve the environmental conditions in the cross-border regions (AP Vojvodina and Bács-Kiskun County) through the prevention of further expansion of allergenic plants.

Specific objectives:

(1) Reduction in the presence of weed and allergen plant – ambrosia, through mechanical and chemical treatment in urban and rural areas;

(2) Awareness raising and educating of target groups and informing the public about the significance and the way of fighting ambrosia;

(3) Continual monitoring of the area under ambrosia and control of presence of ambrosia pollen in the air.

Expected results:

(1)    Mechanically and chemically destroyed ambrosia in the border area on a surface of 6500 square metres;

(2) Reduced concentration of pollen of ambrosia in the border area;

(3) Trained general practitioners, agriculturalists, communal inspectors, pupils, and population informed about the negative impact of ambrosia in border area.

Main activities:

(1) Educational activities include 4 seminars for agriculturalists (in Sombor, Zrenjanin, Sremska Mitrovica and Baja), 2 conferences for general practitioners  (in Sombor and Baja) and 1 seminar for communal inspectors (in Novi Sad), with the aim of increasing the knowledge on the negative effects of ambrosia

(2) Public awareness raising is achieved by media coverage of all project activities. In addition, art and literary competition for pupils of elementary and secondary schools (in AP Vojvodina and Baja), with the topic of harmfulness of ambrosia, will be organised.

(3) The procurement of equipment and services necessary to destroy ambrosia is done in compliance with PRAG rules and it involves the procurement of small tractors, grass trimmers, measuring stations for the measurement of pollen concentration in the air, as well as services for mechanical and chemical treatment of ambrosia.

(4) The mechanical and chemical treatment of ambrosia involves the identification of areas under ambrosia and its continual suppression (in the area of 4000 square metres in AP Vojvodina and 2500 square metres in the vicinity of Baja).

(5) The measuring of concentration of pollen in the air will be done by means of 6 newly procured measuring stations (in Sombor, Zrenjanin, Vrbas, Kikinda, Sremska Mitrovica and Baja).

(6) Software and web site development, containing information on ambrosia, mechanical and chemical treatment of identified areas, measured pollen concentration and all other implemented project activities.

Target groups: Agriculturalists, general practitioners, communal inspectors, pupils of elementary and secondary schools, as well as local population in the cross-border area.
