On projects to mark World Water Day

World Water Day has been marked in Temerin Municipality, by presenting the project “Environmentally friendly water management in plain areas”, which resulted from the partnership among the European Affairs Fund of Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, PWMC “Vode Vojvodine” and Directorate for Environmental Protection and “ATI-VIZIG” (Alsó-Tisza-vidéki Vizügyi Igazgatóság) from Szeged. The project, worth EUR 598.624, is co-financed by the European Union under Hungary – Serbia IPA Cross-border Cooperation Programme. The project implementation started on 1 February and will last 18 months. Its objective is to link competent institutions in Vojvodina and South Hungary responsible for flood prevention and outpouring of rivers.

Within the project, there will be works involving dredging of over six kilometres of the Jegrička watercourse in the local community of Sirig, which would contribute to the improvement of water flow and quality of the Jegrička and protection of flora and fauna. Otherwise, the Jegrička watercourse, in the length of 64 kilometres, is most important for being the habitat of rare plant and animal species, which is the reason why it was put under protection as a nature park in 2005. The United Nations declared 2013 as the International Year of Water Cooperation. The presentation involved activities which aim was to raise awareness both on the potential for increased cooperation, and on the challenges facing water management in light of the increase in demand for water access, allocation and services.
