City of Novi Sad – European Capital of Culture 2021

After the final presentation of the “Novi Sad 2021” project, held in Brussels on 13.10.2016, the selection panel of independent experts assessing the cities competing to be European Capital of Culture in 2021 in a candidate country or potential candidate decided that Novi Sad, Serbia should be awarded the title.

In the final stage, in a competition with Herceg Novi, Montenegro, the application was presented orally by the delegation made up of artists, teachers, city planners and curators from Novi Sad, led by Miloš Vučević, Mayor and Mr. Nemanja Milenković, Chairperson of Organization Board of Novi Sad 2021 and the Chairman of the EXIT Foundation Board of Directors.

 

The project Novi Sad 2021 is designed as a platform for the development of cultural and creative potentials of the City, which aims to strengthen the cultural vitality of the city, enable urban regeneration and improve the international reputation of the tourist offer of Novi Sad. Through the project Novi Sad 2021 the City of Novi Sad will develop its local concept and strategy of sustainable development of the cultural sector with a focus on: strengthening institutions of culture, the reconstruction of cultural heritage, strengthening cultural participation, development of cultural and creative industries, decentralization and inter-sectoral collaboration.

At the premises of the Mission of the Republic of Serbia to the EU, where the Vojvodina European Office is based, a reception was organized in honor of the delegation of the City of Novi Sad having received the title European Capital of Culture 2021. The opening remarks were given by Ambassador Ana Hrustanović, Head of the Mission of the Republic of Serbia to the EU, Miloš Vučević, Mayor of Novi Sad and Mr. Nemanja Milenkovic, President of the Organization Board of Novi Sad 2021.
