Filter installation in Sombor as the core of the MICROPLASTICS project

One of the main activities of the project “Reducing water pollution by microplastics in the cross-border area – MICROPLASTICS” is the procurement and installation of microplastic filters.

This filter was designed in collaboration with researchers in Hungary and made of stainless steel to suit the specific conditions of local wastewater. Its purpose is to trap microplastic particles and harmful hormone-disrupting additives, such as Bisphenols and Phthalates, before they reach rivers and wetlands.

The installation of the filters was carried out on June 1ст at the Public Utility Company “Vodokanal” in Sombor, organized by the Fund, and represents a significant step in the protection of biodiversity and public health in the cross-border region.

Мeasurements will be taken both in the effluent branches of the treatment plant and in surface waters that are in direct contact with those effluent branches in the months following installation to test the efficiency of the installed filter.

The first sampling and measurement will be carried out immediately after the filter installation to verify the current efficiency and allow for minor corrections to the filter structure, installation or operation. After the filter installation, in the following months, the project partners directly involved in the pilot testing will monitor the surrounding surface waters associated with the discharge waters, in order to verify the efficiency of the filter.
