Training on Water Emergency Response Conducted under the “Interventions on the Danube – I.D.DANUBE” Project
Co-funded through the Interreg VI-A IPA Croatia–Serbia Programme, the project “Interventions on the Danube” (I.D.DANUBE) brings together the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Serbia – Sector for Emergency Management, Fund for European Affairs and Development of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Vukovar-Srijem County, and the Public Institution “Port Authority Vukovar” in a joint effort to strengthen cross-border emergency response capacities along the Danube.
The training combined both theoretical and practical components. In the theoretical segment, participants were introduced to key topics such as “Dangers on Large Rivers” and “CEVNI – Signs on Inland Waterways”, along with relevant experience and best practice examples related to interventions on the Danube River.
The practical segment involved specialized team members carrying out exercises and operational tasks using six boats, under the professional guidance of instructors from the Fire and Rescue Units Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior.
The I.D.DANUBE project not only enhances the capacities of fire and rescue units, but also promotes the development of sustainable cooperation among relevant institutions aimed at coordinated crisis management in the cross-border area.
The next stage of implementation foresees joint field exercises involving cross-border partners in the Croatia–Serbia border region, allowing for the practical application of the Action Plan developed within the project. This Action Plan will serve as a practical reference for future joint responses to emergencies on the Danube River, while also enabling an assessment of the operational readiness of all participants.
In the context of climate change and the increasing demand for effective crisis response, the Danube—one of Europe’s key rivers—plays an ever more important role in cross-border cooperation.
The project “Interventions on the Danube” – I.D.DANUBE (project number HR-RS00034), with a total value of EUR 1,789,074.92, of which EUR 1,520,713.67 is co-financed by the European Union, represents a significant investment in enhancing the preparedness of fire and rescue services, as well as strengthening safety and disaster resilience along the Danube River.
Project implementation commenced on September 1, 2024 and is planned to run until February 28, 2027.
