“Vojvodina, one of the most significant regions in Southeastern Europe”

The Institute of the Regions of Europe (IRE) organised the second conference of European regions in the Austrian city of Salzburg, the birthplace of W. A. Mozart, from 20 to 22 August, during which IRE’s official publication was also promoted.

“The Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, with its rich European cultural heritage and exciting development perspectives and status as one of the most significant regions in Southeastern Europe, has become a new member of the IRE”, as it appeared on the front page of the newsletter, which is distributed in almost fifty regions across Europe. The following quotation is taken from the text: “On 6 June 2006 in Novi Sad, the capital of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, the Chairman of the Institute of the Regions of Europe (IRE), Dr. Franz Schausberger, met with important regional politicians in order to conduct in-depth talks on the current situation in this region of Serbia.

Vojvodina, with just over two million inhabitants has managed to remain a region with a high degree of ethnic diversity. As well as Serbs, who make up approximately 65% of the population, there are also Hungarians, Slovaks, Croatians, Montenegrins, Ruthenians, Romanians, Bulgarians, Germans, Czechs, Ukrainians, Roma and Sinti, Albanians, Bosnians and many more: altogether there are 26 nations, national minorities and ethnic groups. The official languages are Serbian, Hungarian, Croatian, Romanian, Slovakian and Ruthenian.”

The names of the President of the Assembly and of the President of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, as well as the structure of political parties of the Assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina are also listed on a two-page bilingual text – in German and English.
