“European Village” event held in Zrenjanin

Marking Europe Day, the “European Village” event was held for the fifth time in Zrenjanin on 12 May 2016.

Pupils of 26 elementary schools, together with their guests presented the traditions and customs of the EU Member States. In addition to this unique EU fair, an EU quiz was organized for the six-grade pupils to test knowledge of the EU.

The event was supported by the Delegation of the EU to the Republic of Serbia, EU Info Point Novi Sad, European Affairs Fund of AP Vojvodina, as well as the embassies of some EU MSs.

The Delegation of the EU to the Republic of Serbia prepared awards for the winners of the competition, whereas the European Affairs Fund of AP Vojvodina also prepared awards for all participating schools, as well as schools whose students won the first three places in the competition.

The “European Village” was opened by Oscar Benedict, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia, and Čedomir Janjić, Mayor of Zrenjanin. On behalf of the European Affairs Fund of AP Vojvodina, Dražen Lovrić pointed out the Fund’s activities in the field of education and promotion of European values.

The project was initiated by the elementary school “Mladost (Youth)” from Tomaševac in 2012, and shortly after that, other schools joined, acknowledging its importance, educational and creative potential.

The idea for the event stemmed from the wish to promote the differences between nations and countries composing modern Europe, and from the fact that a great number of children and young people never travelled to the EU MSs and did not have the opportunity to learn something more about them. The main goal of “European Village” is the affirmation of European values, good will, peace and education on the EU and its members.
